Join us as we discuss The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See. The story is set on the Korean Island of Jeju and spans the years from the 1938 Japanese occupation to South Korea’s modern republic of 2008. The women of the title are haenyeo, female divers and family breadwinners in a semi matriarchal society. The main characters are two divers and longtime friends tested by two wars and the historical times in which their lives play out. A NYT reviewer said of the author, “See excels at exploring the bonds between women, whether friends or family.”
The discussion will be held in the library’s meeting room.
