Imagined Women Discussion Series

MarkSchenker2Part one: March 31st, 7:00pm – Dr. Mark Schenker of Yale University will present three lectures at the Killingworth Library in the series “Imagined Women”, featuring Madame Bovary, The House of Mirth, and Mrs. Dalloway.
“Imagined Women” examines a series of novels that have a woman as the central focus and discusses the heroines both as fictional characters in the context of the novel (how are they created?) AND as credible people who tell us something about real women in the historical context in which the novel was written (what can they teach us?). The novels give a range of authors (French, American and English) as well as time periods ranging from mid-19th to early 20th centuries.
March 31 at 7pm: Gustave Flaubert’s Madame Bovary
April 30 at 7pm: Edith Wharton’s The House of Mirth
May 28 at 7pm: Virginia Woolf ‘s Mrs. Dalloway
Extra copies of the books will be available at the circulation desk.
The event is free but advance sign up is encouraged. Please call the Killingworth Library at 860-663-2000 to reserve your space.
