On June 16th, at 12:30-1:30, the Homeschool Book Club for 9 -11 year olds will be sharing a graphic novel of their own choosing with the group.
Letting readers choose what they want to read and trying different genres boosts their reading engagement! It has been noted that graphic novels improve comprehension helping the reader grasp storylines and infer character motivations. GN’s also support diverse learners providing illustrations to scaffold what is needed to understand context clues in the text and help them “read” nonverbal cues and artistic choices that don’t always show up in a traditional story. They also enhance vocabulary, increase motivation and hopefully foster a lifelong love of reading!
Readers bring the GN that you chose to read with you and be prepared to share it with the group. What would you say to entice other readers to try it but say only enough to not give away the ending?!
We will also use some of our time to VOTE on future “reads” for the fall!
The discussion will be held in the children’s room. Homeschool students are welcome to sign up with Mrs. Fig. by emailing her at jfigurelli@killingworthlibrary.org.
