Robert Thorson ~ New England’s Stony Sense of Place

Robert ThorsonThursday, April 23rd at 7:00pm. New Englanders love their old stone walls. Why? The answer isn’t quite as obvious as it seems. Come hear what UConn professor Robert Thorson thinks during this public lecture program. The history, art, psychology, and science of stone walls are all on the menu. Readings, photographic slides, and hands-on specimens will be part of the program.

Professor Thorson is the author of Stone Wall Secrets, Exploring Stone Walls, Stone By Stone, Beyond Walden, and Walden’s Shore.

During his first twenty years at UConn, his appointment was with the Department of Geology and Geophysics. In 2005, he joined the Department of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology and the Department of Anthropology (Archaeology), with additional commitments to the Honors Program and the Center for Integrated Geosciences.

Thorson’s academic career took a turn in 2002 after publication of “Stone by Stone”. Within a year, it had become a regional bestseller and had won the Connecticut Book Award for nonfiction. This inaugurated a decade of evangelical advocacy for the preservation of historic landscapes, one that included giving over 500 hundred talks.

Copies of Professor Thorson’s books will be available for signing and inscription. Sales support the Killingworth Library, as well as outreach efforts for conservation of historic landscapes and small lakes.

The event is free, advance registration is required. Please call the Killingworth Library at 860-663-2000 or visit www.killingworthlibrary.org for additional details.
