Tuesday, January 9th, 1:00pm. “The Underground Railroad” by Colson Whitehead is the Pulitzer Prize winning novel being discussed at the January meeting of the Killingworth Library Tuesday Book Discussion Group. What we understand as a web of committed souls helping slaves escape to freedom, Whitehead transforms into an actual train transporting fugitives north. Central to the novel is Cora, a teen age slave born on a Georgia plantation. In her journey toward freedom, she has to evade a complex and cruel mix of evil doers out to drag her back or worse. Michiko Kakutani in his New York Times review of August 5, 2016 wrote of the novel, “In recounting Cora’s story, Mr. Whitehead communicates the horrors of slavery and its toxic legacy… even as he memorializes the yearning for freedom that spurs one generation after another to persevere in the search for justice.” Extra copies are available at the circulation desk. Newcomers always welcome!
