“The Russian Debutante’s Handbook”, Gary Shteyngart’s first novel, will be discussed at the February 11th meeting of the Killingworth Library’s Tuesday Book Discussion Group.
The main character, Vladimir, (the word character is used with all its connotations) is a 25-year-old Russian immigrant whose mother called him “Little Failure” in expressing her view of his talents. The story begins in 1993 New York but travels to eastern Europe as it gets underway. Vladimir’s little failure of a life will get interesting when he meets a wealthy but unhinged old Russian war hero and as one reviewer wrote, begins “an adventure of unrelenting lunacy that overturns his assumptions about what it means to be an immigrant in America.”
Discussion begins at 1:00 pm in the Killingworth Library meeting room, Copies of the book can be found behind the circulation desk.
